The victory lesson evolved. As these things happen The Lord intervened. From a class on the features of change, the teaching morphed into looking at the place of the Holy Spirit in the whole change process. Change can’t be faked. The use of the step process can be a catalyst of change, but it isn’t the originator of change. As any drunk or addict knows will power is not enough. Spiritual intervention is necessary. In AA and in secular places this help is filled with a library of possibilities. The seeker simply seeks the best deal for themselves.

Here the war begins. Here the controversy rages. In retrospect, this issue is the deadly ground between radically different ideas of recovery and the spiritual underpinning of the spiritual wars. I am convinced I have been led to this ground.

A dear AA friend sent me a book to read and comment on. In the next posts and podcasts, I will explore various perspectives which this book raises.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a middle-of-the-road type of guy. I will die to find the middle position. I will throw my body to make a bridge over difficult waters. I have spent my entire life trying to bridge the gap between faith and recovery.

In this particular lesson, I pivoted from my change theme to an introduction or reminder to my church audience of the action of the Holy Spirit as it related to change. So I will dive into the Holy Spirit and its action. In contrast to mystical traditions.

My next podcast will be about this action of the Holy Spirit in recovery and change. And comments on the use of mystical traditions in recovery.
