How do the relationships between a person and their God differ in different recovery worlds? Actually, for Faith people, you would think they would be similar. In practice, people of faith are all over the place. They go from mystic eastern spirit guide stuff to ultra holiness. In secular Recovery, spiritual thought goes from Eastern mystic stuff to New age stuff. In the middle of both areas are the more traditional views.

Ignoring the fringes we find a pretty traditional view of how our relationship with God operates. In this area in the middle, I want to talk about our idea of worship. I think to recovery people they think of Ask for help and Thank at night. As a courtesy to a higher power. To Faith people, it gets more complicated. Many feel it is an obligation and a sign of devotion.

Here at this point is where the real issues lie. Basically, recovery people may view the higher power as a constellation of resources. Hence Star Wars is cute and Harry Potter is nice. Of course, there is the good side and the bad side. But the consequences of the choices between the many are inconsequential.

To a person of Conservative Faith, the choices are of the highest consequence.

Here we come to worship. It is convicting to come to believe the quality of our worship says a great deal about our relationship to our God and our understanding of just who He is and what impact he has on our lives. It is convicting to me.

My worship illustrates my understanding of the reality of who God is and the power he wields in the lives of a man here and hereafter.

Here is the core of the divide. It is our understanding of who this is who holds our destiny in His hands. But to be fair this is a divide in the church as well.

It is more fun and comfortable to be liberal and open-minded.

Praise God for Grace!
