In all our enterprises we make unconscious choices from day to day and week to week. The addict or the drunk makes choices every day. Not do I drink or use today? No, the choice is to do something today that keeps me further away from me picking up today. A drunk and addict pickups and uses unless he or she stays steps ahead of the addiction. This never changes for the life of the addict or drunk. People in Faith miss this immediate consequence of negligent action. In meetings, people in addiction are constantly reminded of the consequence of the sloppy practice.
People of faith seem to miss the visceral importance of the quality of their walk. Recovery people know or they should know their life depends on their relationship with their God. For faith people, grace does remove the urgency, but to recovery people lack of intense focus is dangerous. In fact lack of focus can be as dangerous for faith folks. Look at leaders who have gotten their eyes off the ball. Look at ministries who take their eyes off Jesus and look at numbers and book deals.
From both Faith and Recovery, the stakes are high. For both sides, the war is for people’s lives.
We are all the same. And we are all different. The tribal idea will not get it done. But Jesus will if we let Him.
