This is the chapter of the book I remembered. And low and behold I was remembering correctly. A victory at my age!

Chapter 10
 ‘Medora Junction’—Between Two Worlds

After graduation from high school, I assumed that college was out and the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) was in. Dad and Mom heard me say this without any outer expression of opinion. But they must have been horrified. Very soon I was told that I was going to college, so what do you want to do there? As with Ivan, it was just a question of money. Some way the various sources of a few dollars here and a few there would squeeze me through with just enough. As with Ivan, Dad learned that I qualified for a state scholarship. Business administration and accounting would assure a job upon graduation. So Indiana University would be the place. I took a one day round trip to Bloomington “by way of my thumb”. From this day on, through my college years, my trip by thumb usually was a ride from Medora to the junction with U.S. Route 50. Most traffic from Medora turned toward Brownstown, not Bedford. So I was dropped at 50. I called it “Medora Junction”, even though there was only a gas station with a “Mom and Pop Store” and no official name for the junction. From there, it was thumb to Bedford and then Bloomington. Thus began my first thumbing to Indiana University.
