It is funny how you need a translator to communicate between recovery folk and faith folk. The word suggestion is such a word. In AA a suggestion is the best distillation of corporate wisdom on anything. In faith options and individual thought are not held in great esteem. In faith, it is easy to get to a black and white pallet of ideas. There may be reasons for this, but recovery folk will want a palette of choices.
Faith people have to understand to AA and NA a person turning away from engagement with their program is a life and death decision. So they try to avoid putting obstacles to people’s engagement. The differences are subtle but the key to interacting.
Both populations have their own vocabulary. And they have their own set of priorities.
The most important idea to always remember is there is an overriding reason to sort this out. People in addiction die suddenly with unformed spiritual commitments. People of faith surrender to addiction within a whisper of help.
Recovery people bring a culture of honesty. Faith people bring a Savor who does miracles.
We need each other!
