In my journeys in recovery and in the church I could not put my finger on a bent and a bias I found in all the places I went. I couldn’t conceive of bias in the places I depended on for my life. So I stayed in denial of the differences. As an example in AA after I found Jesus I struggled with the hostility toward Jesus stuff. And in the church, I dealt with the negative attitude toward AA. The church gets their panties in a twist over ‘God as we understand Him’. They never asked why that history is there. The church folks insisted on Recovery their way. And in many cases made their arguments with secular recovery sprinkled with biblical bits pulled out of context. I call this Recovery tribalism. What seemed to be missing was a view of the people.
